Values taught by Sai Baba
Sai Baba’s life stories and the experiences shared by his devotees constitute his true teachings. These lessons, received through direct experience, bring about a complete transformation in the hearts of devotees. These values guide us toward the path of true Righteousness (Dharma). The five primary experiences provided by Sai Baba cultivate ten types of values within our minds.
1. Protector of devotees
Faith and Fortitude (Nishtha and Saburi)
Sai Baba provides help to his devotees as soon as they call out his name, “Sai”. One does not need to believe in Sai Baba just because someone else said so. This can be confirmed through direct personal experience. Sai Baba himself has stated this. His help reaches those who ask for it. His guidance is obtained through an individual, a message in a book, an event, a dream, or by instilling a firm inner resolve. This is the direct experience of the devotees.
Through such experiences, a firm faith in Sai Baba is established, and the mind achieves stability. With these qualities, one can face life’s problems with steady courage. The feeling that we have a Guide (Guru) to support us provides immense courage and fearlessness.
2. Form of all Gods
Peace and Unity
Sai Baba taught that the God of everyone is One. He appeared in the form of various deities to those who worshipped them. He provided divine experiences to followers of different religions and traditions within their own respective practices. He stated that everyone should practice their own religious traditions and study their own scriptures with devotion. He emphasized that there is no need for anyone to change their religion, and that everyone should respect fellow human beings of other faiths. He taught that the Divine and the Guru should be worshipped with devotion and love, and that superstitious rituals or harsh rules are unnecessary. Baba’s teachings, known through direct experience, reveal the truth to us. They grant peace. They foster mutual respect between different religions and traditions. This develops a sense of equality and unity among people. Any society that cultivates these values achieves great progress. This not only protects national integrity but also establishes unity and peace among the nations of the world.
3.Form of all beings
Universal brotherhood and service
Sai Baba provides experiences that he pervades all living beings. This creates a feeling that all humans are equal, regardless of differences in caste, creed, race, region, gender, or language. This fosters the spirit of universal brotherhood. The realization that He resides in all creatures develops love and kindness toward animals and plants.
These feelings inspire a commitment to serve the helpless. Planting trees and protecting the environment are also considered forms of such service.
4. Omniscience
Values and Harmony
Sai Baba proved through several incidents that he knows everything happening in everyone’s mind and even events occurring in distant places. Through these experiences, devotees find opportunities to correct themselves. Sai Baba’s life stories and his devotees’ experiences bear witness to this. Values such as self-control, discipline, knowledge, love, kindness, equality, cooperation, and patience are naturally cultivated. These values enable people to live in harmony.
5.Benefactor
Contentment and Happiness
Human desires are endless. One remains dissatisfied because of these unending desires. Sai Baba stated that it is fine to have a small desire, as its fulfillment brings happiness. We can pray for it. However, if a great harm is hidden behind that desire, it may bring more sorrow to us. We may not know this, but Sai Baba, who is the benefactor, knows it through his omniscience. He protects his devotees from great harm through a small event. Those who understand this through experience do not worry about small hardships or get overly excited by small joys. They accept everything with stability and joy. Achieving this state of mind is a result of spiritual progress.
