Sai Baba’s Path to a Happy Life
Sai Baba taught that both material and spiritual lives are important. The following five principles not only make life blissful but also lead the way to a true spiritual life.
- A human being must strive for progress in both this world and the spiritual realm. Great sages have taught that a human being should strive to achieve the four primary goals of life: Righteousness (Dharma), Prosperity (Artha), Fulfillment (Kama), and Liberation (Moksha). People on this earth seek to live happily by fulfilling their desires. Money is essential for a comfortable lifestyle, and to attain it, one must pursue material progress. However, if a person spends their life relentlessly chasing desires and wealth, they will inevitably lose their peace of mind. To live a truly happy life under any circumstances, spiritual development is absolutely essential.
- Understand that whatever is good for someone is already with them. Whether good or bad, whatever we have is given by God. We must live with contentment, accepting what the Guru has graced us with. We must have firm faith that the Guru will lead us on the best path.
- Do not compare yourself with others in any matter. Do not compare material aspects such as money, wealth, income, loss, strength, weakness, beauty, happiness, or sorrow. Similarly, do not compare spiritual aspects like devotion, knowledge, or spiritual practice (Sadhana). Comparison breeds qualities like dissatisfaction, jealousy, hatred, anger, obsession, and delusion. These lead to restlessness, sorrow, and downfall. Baba taught that whatever we have is best for us, and whatever others have is best for them.
- Strive for your own growth and welfare. Growth is essential in life; a life without progress is stagnant. We must strive to rise above our current state. We must strive for growth in both worldly and spiritual matters. Efforts made to improve ourselves, rather than competing with others, always bring enthusiasm and joy.
- Help the helpless as much as possible. There is no benefit in helping others for the sake of fame or status, or by doing it with a sense of burden or showiness. Such acts do not bring peace to the mind.
One must help the helpless selflessly. This is true Righteousness (Dharma). No matter how much wealth or fame one has, it is wasted if they do not help others. Through selfless help, great qualities like mental peace, happiness, stability, and courage are developed.
